Qualitative vs. Quantitative vs. mixed methods data analysis
I intend to use both qualitative and quantitative analysis in my study. Once we’re back in school and I have my new class, I plan to use current CAASSP and reading inventory (lexile levels) for initial analysis. A pretest to determine prior knowledge will be given, and then I’ll begin our studies on Native Americans through PBL. I hope to show growth in knowledge by using the same test as a posttest once our PBL is concluded, approximately 6 weeks. Students will also be completing projects, group and individual, that will be scored using a rubric. Once we’re finished with the PBL, I will be giving the students a survey to allow them to state their opinion on PBL and give their thoughts on PBL vs. teacher lecture and group vs. individual projects. I will review these qualitative assessments for common themes to apply to further PBLs.

Methodology
I do hope to use some tech tools to implement my action research study. Since I’ll be teaching 5th grade this year, tech tools would work as great hooks to get them interested in the topic we’ll be studying. I can picture a Prezi working in this capacity to introduce the different regions of Native Americans across the United States. This would be an excellent example for a PBL. If the students were to use this tool it would show their learning. I’ve read it time and time again, the greatest way to learn is to teach or explain it to someone else. I’d like to investigate some other tools as well to hopefully broaden my portfolio of tech tools.

What is the Educational Context for my Driving Question?
My driving question is, What is the impact of a cross-curricular PBL on the engagement of all students? Many of the studies/videos we’ve looked at throughout this class address the need to transform our teaching to reach all of our diverse students. PBL is one of the strategies that addresses this ‘transformation’ of teaching. For me, the context is local, as in my classroom. I hope to show that by using PBL as a tool for instruction it will raise the engagement and there by the achievement of my students
